Pavement construction, embankment, trench back filling etc., are, but a few types of projects where measurements of both natural, recompacted density and moisture content must be taken continuously. Two to three basic methods are in constant use – the first and possibly the simplest, using a steel core cutter of known volume, driven into the soil by a rammer. The core cutter is dug out, trimmed and the soil inside, weighed and dried for moisture and density determination. The second method is used where a circular hole is dug into the ground. All the soil from within it is collected, weighed, dried; andthe hole is back-filled with standard single sized sand, poured from a calibrated sand pouring cylinder. A separate calibrating container used with the apparatus assists the operator to check the repeatability of the density of poured sand. The apparatus offered is constructed of heavy duty material.
